AWF Conference 2007
For two days in May over 70 Anglican women gathered at St Paul's Anglican Church in St Helens, Tasmania to attend the Annual General Meeting, to hear the three speakers present the theme of the conference, 'Worship Through the Ages,' and, of course, do the crucial networking that these occasions offer. The opportunity to share and discuss the issues surrounding women in the church, both lay people and clerical, was taken up with passion during the break outs and meal times.
The theme was presented in three parts by speakers Reverend Jo Pycroft, Reverend James Collins and Reverend Will Briggs together elaborating on the theme's chosen Scripture 'Jesus Christ is the Same Yesterday Today and Forever' Hebrews 13:8.
Reverent Pycroft presented the first talk on The Traditional Church and was quick to insist that tradition by no means meant the dead voice of the past, but rather the living voice of God speaking to His people in the tried and tested ways of the Anglican church. Jo elaborated on the precious and meaningful traditions that had been handed down to us that enliven the Anglican church's unique brand of Christianity, which can and are adapted in innovative and creative ways through each generation.
Reverend James Collins was asked to speak on A Church for Today and tackled the complex issues of tensions within the Church and changes within society which have impacted the Church, exploring the reasons why the church is no longer the centre of society or of the community and its present need to re-evaluate the role which it can play in society. He explained that a theology of service has re-emerged as being an authentic expression of the church's nature and role within society, based on the model of Jesus.
Reverend Will Briggs was pleased to be tasked with drawing together the traditional and the church of today under the topic of 'A Binding Together,' where he emphasised the image of God who reveals himself to his people throughout history now and into the future; with the Church growing old and being constantly renewed, containing both an image of a gracious old lady and a beautiful pregnant young bride.
